Serena Swallows is a very welcoming site. The graphics are simple yet very alluring and warm. The site itself looks very simple and of course if it looks simple then it generally tends to be simple. Serena has a banner made up with several different good pictures of her which is a very personal touch to the site and a very nice feature.
The home page is basically site news and updates with requests for reviews dotted in between the texts. It’s a very basic layout which I suppose can only mean one thing. Serena worked on this site herself which is a very brave thing to do.
When it came to navigation I was surprised at just how easy it was to get around the site. All the links to get around the site are placed just under the header. There are no confusing side menus and inside links. The site is as it should be. I did notice one problem when navigating around the site. Once you leave the homepage you have to manually type in the URL to go back there which isn’t very smart considering people will want to review the site after they have looked at it.
However this is several downsides. As well as being simple the site is very basic, although it is tastefully basic. When you visit her shoots page there is just a list of links to shoots rather than picture thumbnails. Each link has written next to it a description of the type of shoot it is to give you some indication but without pictures its hard to tell if this is what Joe surfer wants to look at. The site looks reasonable new due to the lack of content. However, in saying that the content that is there is very good. By the dates of the shoots you can tell that the content is updated each week and every week gets a short description of what Serena did on that shoot, again a nice personal touch.
Serena Swallows has a news portion of her site, but there is also news on her front page so I think this link is waster although it could have been useful if her site was bigger. It basically lists by date all the recent happenings on the site. Again it is all simple text and no thumbs.
Serena’s about page is very interesting. It gives a rather short but very descriptive bio of her and what she likes to get up to. It also gives you the stats of Serena which although isn’t very useful is a nice touch.
Serena Swallows is a small site but it is a very personal one with lots of member/Serena communication which of course keeps her members happy. The fact that members can request shoots and then get to keep the pictures of them is a very good touch and a very good feature. This will keep the members happy and the site well updated.
Overall I think this site has real potential. Once the content is full and the site is updated Serena could have a very good member base that will keep her taking pictures for a long time.
